The 2010 season will not be much better. The Nationals have the number one overall pick in Stephen Strasburg, but he suffered a knee injury in the Arizona Fall League and is not playing like he is completely over it. With the ability to throw over 100 mph, he will be a major contributor for years to come. The Nationals are not rushing him which is the right approach for someone who represents the future of the team. They will use spring training to decide how much of a role he will play over the regular season, but all signs point to Strasburg spending some time in the minors to at least get used to the 5-game rotation. Jordan Zimmerman won't be back from Tommy John surgery until August throwing the rotation into disarray. The addition of Jason Marquis will help hold the rotation down while the signing of Livian Hernandez gives the Nats an inning eater who can be discarded when Zimmerman gets back and they decide Strasburg is ready. Craig Stammen and JD Martin are also candidates to fill out the rotation while the newly acquired Matt Capps will probably take over the role of closer. Ryan Zimmerman's Gold Glove performance last season will only help the youngster's confidence. Expect him to continue to improve. CF Nyjer Morgan will be another important contributor on offense. The Nationals continue to be in full rebuild mode. The addition of Marquis should help them hit about 65-wins this season but still finish at the bottom of the division.
